WARNING: This is an entry from my journal (yes, I write in a journal...lol). It is long, a rant, and has no pictures (deadly combo!)....read if you dare.
Today I was a little surprised by the reaction of my class to a proposed ethical dilemma. The assignment was small, but it did make me think and get a little passionate. My class was presented with the topic of subliminal messages. Although the degree of effectiveness of subliminal messages is unknown and doubtful, I struggle to agree with any use of unconscious persuasion and control.
In class we primarily focused on subliminal messages used in businesses. The messages may be used for ‘good causes’ or ‘manipulative goals’. Some good cause subliminal messages can help employees love their jobs or prevent theft by employees and customers. Examples of the subliminal messages are “You love your job. You are a great salesman.” and “Do not steal. If you steal ,you will go to jail.” These messages are repeated throughout the day and unconsciously heard. On the other hand, some obvious manipulative uses of subliminal messages are to convince customers to purchase products that they would not have autonomously purchased on their own. These messages could be as simple as “Smell the freshly baked cookies. You want cookies.”
The majority of my class was not troubled by any of these messages –for good or manipulative purposes. My class argued that the good uses have beneficial end results –being happy at your job and not stealing. They also were not phased by the manipulative messages. My class felt the customers were only being gently pushed to purchase cookies they already desired anyways. I see this viewpoint, but I think felt it was a narrow view. Being happy at your job and not stealing are good ends, but I don’t think the method (the means) to obtaining these results should be so easily accepted. I may be crazy, but easily accepting the use of subliminal messages makes me uncomfortable. Uses like subliminal messages take away our autonomy. People do not act freely, and instead, they act as the message commands.
This class discussion made me recognize how much I value the freedom to independently make decisions. This freedom allows us to use our minds, challenge processes, and grow. Autonomy is a good that should not be easily sacrificed for any amount of an alternative good. If someone is unhappy with a situation, the I don't think the individual needs a subliminal message to become happy at the work. The individual is unhappy for a reason(s) that needs to be addressed. Uncovering and handling these reasons should be the goal, not burying them. Additionally, ‘bad feelings’ can bring about positive change. For example, being unhappy at work (a bad thing) may encourage an individual to do things a little differently and bring about a good in the future. Similarly, people should not steal because of a subliminal message, they shoudn't steal because ‘not stealing’ is the right thing. A message that unconsciously convinces people to not steal is a short-term solution. Understanding that ‘not stealing’ is the right thing is more important than the outcome itself. Realistically this can probably never be universally achieved, but I still think it's the direction worth going. I compare this short-term solution to the wise saying “If you give a man a fish, he can eat for the day. But if you teach a man to fish, he can eat everyday.” A command (in this case, a subliminal message) makes someone act rightly that day. But if people learn to do things for the right reasons, they will act rightly everyday.
It slightly worries me how easily my class was willing to sacrifice autonomy for instant results. I know I am making a mountain out of a molehill, but I'm realizing how much I value autonomy. This may be due to my upbringing. My parents allowed me to make my own decisions. They offered advice at serious times, but they let me go through the process of making a decision. They always said, “It is a parent’s job to make sure his/her child can live independently when the parents aren't around.” This goes hand in hand with autonomy. I wasn’t told what to do but taught how to decide what to do --how to govern myself. Sometimes my decisions have gotten me into trouble (and it continues to sometimes), but I go through the process and learn. My parents did not want to raise a robot that merely followed commands. I really do love that I was raised this way.
Subliminal messages are a minor issue, but I think easy acceptance of minor issues can lead to future problems. Society might be becoming much too dependent on (or desensitized to) technology to solve problems. Quicker results from technology seem to be preferred over the longer process of learning and understanding the reasoning behind good actions. And don’t get me wrong, the inventors of technological advances (and the creators of subliminal manipulations) are greatly impressive thinkers. However, I just don't want to see the broader society become overly dependent on their technological innovations to solve everything. Technology can do a lot, but it shouldn't substitute decision-making. Stealing and hating one's job are problems, but failing to understand the reasoning behind a right action is a larger problem. I think we should avoid things like subliminal messages at all costs to protect autonomy. We need not become robot-like. Learning to make the right decisions and understanding the reasons behind these decisions is a valuable process in the long-run.
Sorry if I sounded too much like George Orwell’s “1984” world of big brother manipulation.

Nicely delivered, and well thought.
ReplyDeleteSubliminal messages are designed for Robots. That is why they are effective for most, and sometimes troubling to those that elect to think independently from time to time. They are basically rules designed to follow, in order to satisfy someones immediate needs at that precise moment. The movie theatre perfectly times the fresh popcorn to generate new clients at exactly the end of the scheduled production. It is still a choice, yet deeply influenced through the actions of another individual. It should disturb you to react as the cows when the clock strikes 2:30 pm and it is time for a milking. Every cow lines up and heads to the barn in perfect order, to the delight of the milk man. Does the cow have an option ??? Not if the choice is to live in harmony with the other "smart" cows. Remember this ... "You laugh at me because I am different, I laugh at you because you are all the same"
Good analogy to the cows. I had forgotten about their robotic behaviour. It was weird to watch them behave so mindlessly.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it is funny how the "laugh at me because I am different" quote started as merely a goofy quote on our dugout wall, yet it has become one of my most recited quotes. It has a strong underlying meaning. Plus, it goes hand-in-hand with another favorite quote of mine by Ralph Waldo Emerson..."Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Between these simple quotes and being raised by "weirdos", I have no problem taking and trusting my own route. And I mean this as a huge compliment....Its a philosophy of life. I am proud to politely reject an invite to the normal table to instead sit at the "weirdo" table during lunch time. The "weirdos" are our friends because we understand that we are "wierdos" too.
It takes extreme confidence to break away from the herd. I am sure you remember from an early age, no one wants to be a wierdo. In the early years of life you are what other kid's declare that you are, that is tough to ignore until the day you develop the confidence to march to your own drummer. There is a time when EVERYONE must have specific shoes, pants, or the fashion of the day. If you are not comfortable in your own skin, clothes will not correct the problem. But they can hide the truth until you are ready to stare at yourself in the mirror. Imagine the horror of being the only eight year old in Little League with white cleats. In my time it was cool, just like Joe Namath, in your time it was unacceptable. In the end the kid is cool, with or without the cleats. Sometime around 15 years old you start to see a few "wierdo's" understand that they just don't need to belong to the mob in order to survive. The others watch the group respond to a new hair cut or style. The pack can't even decide on their own, without the approval of the herd. Pack approval, or disapproval is required in order to set their version of normal. This is why a Howard Stern can find success while ignoring the masses. Madonna, Roseanne, Manny Ramirez, Warren Sapp, and others decide to reject the herd and create a new normal for the rest of the pack. Before Dick Folsbury every single high jumper rolled over the bar. No one even thought of a different approach, here comes Folsbury rejecting the norm of society, flies over the bar upside down and backwards. Today every successful high jumper prefers the Folsbury Flop. Imagine his coach and peers when he decided the rest of the planet was wrong, and only he knew a better way to high jump. He revolutionized the sport of high jumping for every generation to follow his new found success. Christopher Columbus is recognized as the founder of the theory that the earth was round. Every time I look at the ocean I admire his courage just to speak up against the mob. Looking at the ocean you believe you can see the end, if no one ever returned then a terrible fate must wait at the end as you fall into who knows what disaster that awaits your arrival. To get into a ship, and laugh at conventional wisdom is not an easy task for the mob to endorse. Imagine I was to tell you I believed I could breath underwater, and I was purchasing the first house under the ocean, and I didn't need a tank because I was sure breathing wouldn't be a problem. I know more than the rest of civilization. How would you react ??? Would you brag to your peers prior to the big experiment ??? How did the Son of Christopher Columbus face the crowd ??? With a brave smile, or a sick feeling for his dumb old Dad. Just for the record I did purchase the first beach house on the moon. Don't tell your friends the neighborhood is already taking a turn for the worse. Little tagger basturds marking up my moon wall, where are their parents ?? Typical Earth-Lings only interested in their own stupid beliefs. Glad to see you are a free thinker, that is the only way to grow and explore. You will lead the way for the next generation that elects to drive on your highway towards success. You are a leader, and you are ready to succeed in this journey called life. Your time is now. Set the pace for the others to follow your own private road towards a rewarding tomorrow. It is all in your capable hands. All decisions are yours and yours alone. Congratulation's you "Wierdo" ....
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words and congratulations on being a "weirdo". I enjoyed all the comparisons to Columbus, Dick Folsbury, Howard Stern, etc. And I really liked the reference to the movie Stand By Me at the beginning. It's cool how such a simple line in that movie that is casually slipped in, can carry a lot of wisdom. This is something I am interested in talking about when I return. Maybe late one night when the others are asleep, and after we watch an episode of South Park or the Office on the couch?
